PLAYING THE COURSE Overlooked by Harlech Castle, of all the par-69 courses across the British Isles, the rugged links at Royal St David’s founded in 1894 is regarded by many to be the one which provides the sternest test. There are many memorable collections of closing holes in Wales, and Royal St David’s loop (14,15,16,17 & 17) – are among the very best.

The towering dunes block any chance of a sea view (apart from the observation deck at the 16^th tee), but what you get instead is an enthralling panorama of Snowdonia and Harlech Castle sitting proudly at the clifftop.

Harlech is not a conventional out-and-back layout, rather, the holes meander one way and then the other, guarded passionately by shrewd bunkering and penal rough. When the wind is howling, this can wreak havoc on club selection, as many back-to-back holes of similar yardage will require a completely different approach. This makes it tricky to judge your approach shots, as the bunkers guarding them are well placed and camouflaged.

If you’re looking for chances to score well, those opportunities, are to be found mainly on the outward section particularly on the only 2 par fives 7&8, before the excitement ratchets up on the way back to the clubhouse.

The back nine is a stern test of Golf and on a par with any Championship Links.

Playing at RSD is a unique experience where your line off the tee may be a turret on the castle or the peak of Snowdon. Whatever is your favourite part of the course, the one thing that most golfers agree on is that that can’t wait to come back.
